What is The Graph?

The Graph is an open source protocol that indexes information for decentralized applications. It organizes all information in the blockchain, so developers can work more efficiently to optimize blockchain-based applications such as Ethereum. It also increases access to decentralized projects through public and open application programming interfaces, which are called subgraphs. They are sort of intermediaries that allow two separate applications to communicate with each other.

The Graph indexing tool works in the same way as traditional applications, ie it is used to search and retrieve data, but in this case everything is done in blockchains. However, since it is decentralized, it does not need any intermediaries, which makes it much safer.

The Graph - how it works?

For indexing data from platforms such as Ethereum, the "Subgraph Manifest" is used, which is a description of the subgraph that contains data about smart contracts and all operations in the blockchain before it is written to the platform's database.

Initially, all data from a given blockchain is recorded in the above-mentioned manifests. After that, they are scanned by the The Graph node. By doing this, it collects new data and unlocks those that may turn out to be important in terms of user searches. Information from the blockchain and the application to which the user would like to send it are connected using GraphQL. After this process, users can view query results from their applications.

There is also Graph Explorer on the platform, where you can find subgraphs that already exist on the platform, and ask new questions using GraphQL. The platform currently supports 2,300 subgraphs that index data from platforms such as Ethereum. However, the Graph is scheduled to support more networks in the future.

The Graph ecosystem

There are several important roles in The Graph network that its users can play. Belong to them:

  • Consumers - These are users who pay a fee for the actions of indexers. All software connected with The Graph can play the role of consumers.
  • Indexers - these are nodes responsible for indexing on The Graph platform. They are rewarded for their work in the native currency of the platform - GRT.
  • Curators - using the GRT currency, they distinguish information that may be useful in the eyes of users.
  • Delegates - They delegate their GRTs to the indexers for which they receive a share of their reward.
  • Fishermen - they are responsible for verifying the correctness of answers to user inquiries.
  • Arbitrators - their role is to control the work of indexers and catch those who act against the network.
  • The Graph - GRT cryptocurrency

GRT is an ERC-20 token. It can serve as a medium of exchange, but also functions as a reward for the above-mentioned indexers.

Advantages of The Graph

The Graph is a completely new design, and its use has many advantages.

  • Security - The Graph is decentralized so it has no main entity. All data is scattered and therefore it is impossible to hack it with current technology.
  • Reward system - indexers and delegates are rewarded for their activities with GRT tokens, which started at 3% per annum. The changes to the reward will be at the discretion of the future management of the network.
  • Discount function - in addition to indexing prizes, there is also a prize pool on the web that is intended for all web users who contribute to the development of The Graph. By spending GRT on the web, you can get a partial refund, which is expected to increase the number of inquiries on the web.

What problem Graph solves?

Until The Graph was created, there was no indexer to collect queries about creating decentralized applications on the blockchain. This means that the programmers who created them had to collect data for a given platform on their own. Thanks to The Graph, they can find answers to their questions, thanks to which creating applications in the blockchain is faster and more efficient, while maintaining security.

Who made The Graph?

The Graph was created by, among others, Yaniv Tal, who leads the entire project, Brandon Ramirez, and Jannis Pohlmann. The Graph team also includes professionals from the Ethereum Foundation and Redhat.

The Graph - history

The Graph was launched on December 17, 2020. The initial price of their cryptocurrency was $ 0.26 . The platform and the token itself were quite popular, because in less than 2 months the GRT rate shot up by over 1000%, and The Graph was then on the 24th place in the CMC ranking in terms of market capitalization.
